The wide variety of boats operating out of Thailand can offer extremely good value for money. Those operating in the more difficult areas, such as West Papua and Papua New Guinea, tend to be much more expensive but the pay-off is that you are unlikely to see another dive vessel during your trip.

The Pacific is such a wide area that there are no specific characteristics to any of the boats used. The Indian Ocean atolls of the Maldives are well-served by a huge liveaboard fleet and, besides being the only way to get to dive different sites making good use of prevailing currents, the price range will suit a variety of pockets. Maldivian liveaboards tend to work in conjunction with a smaller diving dhoni.
